Famous for her “snub nose” Elizabeth Taylor’s nose is still among the top requests for rhinoplasty procedures across North America. Despite there being over seven billion people across the world, a study in the Journal of Craniofacial Surgery indicated research for only 14 different shapes of noses; some of the nose types are popular and naturally sculpted in a pleasing profile, while other noses are not as aesthetically appealing. Flatter noses, wider nostrils or bumps along the ridge are prominent characterizes of the nose archetypes that are less flattering.

The centerpiece of the face, women from all parts of the world use rhinoplasty to reshape their nose and transform their appearance. Smaller noses are often viewed as more aesthetically pleasing on women, and straight ridges that end with a more narrow turned -up tip with smaller nostrils are also considered more flattering features. According to the American Society for Plastic Surgery [ASPS] rhinoplasty is among the top five cosmetic procedures for men and women of all ages due to its versatility as it is used to transform the appearance, but also to correct deformities from injury, birth defects or breathing problems.

Geographic location influences the desired outcome of rhinoplasty procedures; in North America Plastic Surgeons see women who want their nose reshaped to current celebrity icons. Carey Mulligan with her “turned-up” petite nose shape is a current request as her nose has a smaller shape with a slightly turned up tip. Since her role in Gatsby, Mulligan’s nose has been a popular request among women across America who want a softer profile. Another example is of The Mona Lisa nose as a more traditional shape that plastic surgeons are asked to create as the profile has a long, slender ridge with a narrow tip. This nose shape is requested by women who have more prominent noses or bumps in the ridge who want a more symmetrical profile.

A smaller nose and a symmetrical profile is requested for many reasons as it opens up the space between the eyes and allows for the cheekbones and eyes to become the more prominent feature. It also allows for a more pleasing and defined profile. Many women wish to make their nose smaller and slightly thinner, so they opt to keep their overall nose shape and decrease the size. Blake Lively and Jennifer Aniston are two examples of such cases where surgeon chose to keep the basic shape of the nose while decreasing the size in certain areas to make their noses appear smaller. The results are more natural as the decrease in size is a subtle approach to rhinoplasty, while altering the shape is a bit more obvious and drastic.

In South Africa women use rhinoplasty in an effort to look more Westernized as a study from a group from Dartmouth College found that women from Venezuela want to change their nose shapes to a more American aesthetic. The group of women studied wanted to transform their nose shape from flatter with a wider tip, to the longer and leaner nose shape typical of white North American women. Women from African American backgrounds or other mixed ethnicities request such procedures to transform their appearance to fit the beauty ideal projected by Western society. The study group of women claimed that their rhinoplasty procedures not only transformed their appearance, but also boosted their self-esteem and confidence.

The ASPS statistic report shows that 243,000 nose jobs were performed in 2012, making it the second most common procedure after breast augmentation. Rhinoplasty is the medical term for nose jobs, but there are non-surgical options as well that are FDA approved. Injectable fillers, such as those composed of hyaluronic acid and calcium hydroxiapatyte, are used to smooth over bumpy or uneven bridges and tips on the nose. This procedure is ideal for those who wish to fill in uneven contours and takes around 30 minutes; however it cannot change the shape or size of the nose, and it only lasts for a few months.

Rhinoplasty covers a range of procedures performed on the nasal area, but may include rebuilding the bones, reshaping the cartilage, shortening of the septum for a smaller nose, or placing grafts or implants in the nose to add length or increase the size.  After surgery, the nose is packed with dressing material and splints are taped in place so the bones heal in straight alignment.  The plug/packing is made of soft foam and includes a small tube for air passage.  This helps to stabilize the septum (the internal structure composed of bone and cartilage), control the bleeding, and avoid the formation of scar tissue inside the nose.

The most important preparation for rhinoplasty is to stop taking all prescription drugs at least two weeks prior to the surgery to lessen the chance of bleeding.  After the surgery, you may encounter excess bleeding, infection, swelling, and bruising; however these symptoms should cease within the first month, but you may not see definitive final results for six months to a year, although the most dramatic and positive changes are noticeable from the first month.  It is best to discuss all of your options for preparation and postoperative care with your Plastic Surgeon, and if you have a particular nose shape in mind, bring in a picture for your surgeon to consider.
